Boutique fitness brands grow their member base in two ways: acquiring new members and retaining the ones they have. In 2027, studios face a more competitive market than ever, and succeeding at both is key to longevity.

Mariana Tek’s 2027 Boutique Fitness Industry Report covers the full member lifecycle. It shows when churn signals first appear, which acquisition channels convert best, and how boutique fitness retention is holding up in a tougher economy.

3 Boutique Fitness Industry Report Insights About the Member Lifecycle in 2027

1) When do boutique fitness members start to churn?

Churn signals show up 3 to 8 months before a member cancels or downgrades. Visit frequency and spend both start declining about 3 months before a cancellation. For long-tenured members headed toward a downgrade, the drop starts even earlier, around 8 months out.

In other words, studio member churn is a trajectory you can track, not a moment you find out about too late.

2) Which acquisition channels convert best for boutique fitness studios?

On average, 19% of monthly studio traffic comes from new users, so it’s worth knowing where those new customers are coming from. Third-party bookings bring in a third of new customers but convert to membership at just 1.9%. Self-booked and walk-in customers convert at 11% and commit faster.

Volume from a channel doesn’t equal quality. Analyze which acquisition sources your brand relies on, and whether they’re paying off in the long run.

Looking for ways to bring in more new clients? According to our customer survey, the top acquisition strategies going into 2027 are:

  • Word of mouth
  • Social media
  • Promotional discounts

3) Is boutique fitness retention holding up in a tougher economy?

Yes. Retention and class fill rates stayed within 1 to 2 percentage points year over year across studios active in all 24 months, despite rising costs squeezing household budgets. Retention was also fairly steady across the four US regions, with only the South falling by more than 1 percentage point.

Connection appears to outperform other retention strategies. When we asked customers what has been most effective for member retention, instructor relationships topped the list, followed by celebrating milestones, personalized communication, and community events.
